Around the Station
Redhill grew up around the railway junction in the mid 1800s, and the streets nearest the station and the old centre are Victorian terraces and semis under Welsh slate. Chimneys run along the party walls and valleys sit between front and back slopes. A hundred and fifty years on, the slates are often sound and the nails are not.
Earlswood and Meadvale
South of the town, Earlswood and the Meadvale side mix later Victorian houses with inter war semis in clay plain tile. Hipped roofs with bay windows and porch canopies are common, and the mortar bedding the ridges and hips is the first thing to go after ninety winters.
Merstham
Merstham has two faces. The old village, along Quality Street and around the church, has period cottages under handmade clay and slate. Beyond it is a large post war estate of houses and low rise blocks, built from the 1950s, under concrete tiles and flat roofs that are now well into their second or third covering.
Post War Redhill
Much of Redhill's housing dates from the 1950s and 60s: semis, terraces and bungalows under concrete interlocking tiles. These are quick to survey and easy to match.
