Anywhere with awkward corners, penetrations or a need to walk on the roof. It is also the covering to choose where a flat roof is visible from the rooms above, because it is smooth, even and stays that way.

GRP is also the covering to choose where a flat roof carries a rooflight, a lantern or a balcony door, because the upstands and trims are laminated into the roof rather than sealed against it. It takes foot traffic for maintenance without damage.

A flat roof is never quite flat. We set the deck to fall towards the outlets so water leaves rather than ponds, size the outlets for the roof area, and use proper GRP trims at the drip edge and the raised edge so the finish is clean and the water goes where it should.

The fall is built into the deck before any resin is mixed. The trims are GRP too, bonded into the laminate rather than fixed on top, so the edge sheds water cleanly and there is nothing to lift or rust. Outlets are sized to the roof and placed where the water collects.

A GRP roof is designed to the flat roof code of practice, BS 6229, with a fall built into the deck and outlets positioned at the low points. The trims are bonded into the laminate and the drip edge sits over the gutter so water leaves the roof cleanly.

It wants a dry day to lay and a rigid deck underneath. A very large roof that will move with the building, or a roof that cannot be re decked, may be better in EPDM rubber, and we will say so. We fit both and quote for the one that suits the building.

GRP needs a rigid deck and a dry, mild day. A roof over an old boarded deck that cannot be replaced, a very large roof that will move, or a job that must be done in wet weather is better in EPDM or felt, and the quote says which we recommend and why.

A GRP roof that was laid well rarely needs anything. Where one has cracked at an upstand, been laid thin or lost its topcoat we can repair and recoat it, provided the deck underneath is sound.

Cracks at an upstand or a thin laminate can be ground back, re laminated and re coated. A topcoat that has chalked can be recoated. If the deck underneath has failed the roof comes off and is rebuilt.

A GRP repair is a proper re lamination: the damaged area is ground back, cleaned, re laminated with new matting and resin, and re coated to match. It is a day’s work on most roofs and comes with the same photographs as a new one.
