Shaftesbury Park
Between Lavender Hill and the railway, the Shaftesbury Park estate was built in the 1870s as two storey terraced cottages for working families, with Gothic detail and small turrets on the corner houses. It is a conservation area. The roofs are small and steep, and the turret caps, bay roofs and short valleys use a lot of lead for their size.
Between the Commons
The streets between Clapham Common and Wandsworth Common, around Northcote Road, are later Victorian: taller terraces and larger houses under Welsh slate, with back additions, shared stacks and, now, a loft conversion on most of them. Original slate survives on many, held on with nails that have long since rusted.
Mansion Flats by the Park
Facing Battersea Park, the red brick mansion blocks along Prince of Wales Drive and Albert Bridge Road have some of the most involved roofs in SW11: slate mansards, dormers, lead flats and parapet gutters hidden from the street. Work on them is planned with the freeholder or managing agent, and access is half the job.
Lavender Hill and Clapham Junction
Along the main roads, Victorian terraces and flats over shops sit behind front parapets. Behind many of them a valley gutter runs between two slopes, the old London roof, and nobody thinks about it until it chokes. Reaching it usually means going up from the back.
Latchmere and the Estates
The Latchmere estate, early council housing from the 1900s, has its own cottage style roofs, and Battersea also has post war estates with long flat roofs and low pitched blocks. Flat roofs at that scale fail at the outlets, the upstands and the joints, not usually in the middle.
Extensions and Roof Terraces

What is a London roof, and why does mine leak?
Two slopes falling inwards to a valley gutter hidden behind a front parapet. When that gutter blocks or its lining splits, the top floor gets wet. Clearing it and putting in new lead is the usual repair.

Do I need permission to replace my roof terrace's covering?
Re-covering an existing flat roof like for like does not normally need planning permission. Changes to a terrace itself, or work in a conservation area, can be different, and we check what applies before we quote.
How do you get scaffold up on a busy Battersea road?
