Esher’s roofs

What the Houses Are,and What Goes Wrong.

Around the Green and Esher Park

Substantial houses, Edwardian and inter war, under clay plain tiles and slate with a lot of decorative gables. Big roofs with a lot of lead. Many have been extended, and the join between old roof and new is a classic leak.

Hinchley Wood and the 1930S

Almost entirely inter war semis and detached houses, clay plain tiles and early concrete, now ninety years old. The tiles usually have life in them; the ridges, valleys and chimneys do not. A lot of these have loft conversions with dormers that are now twenty years into their flat roofs.

Claygate

A village that grew mostly between the wars and after, with a Victorian core near the station. Slate on the older houses, clay and concrete on the rest, and a fair number of bungalows whose low pitches punish any tile that has moved.

The Streets and Their Roofs

Esher itself is a mix of Victorian villas around the High Street and the green, Edwardian houses off the Portsmouth Road and inter war houses in Claygate and Hinchley Wood, most of the latter in clay plain tile with bonnet hips. The larger houses towards the Esher estates carry handmade clay and slate with lead dormers, and Hinchley Wood is a good example of a whole suburb built in a few years in the 1930s and all reaching the same age together.

Working in Esher

Esher is five miles from the office and covered from the Leatherhead line. It sits in Elmbridge, which has conservation areas in the older parts of Esher and its villages, so a slate or clay roof there is repaired in the same material. Scaffold on the main roads through Esher and Claygate is planned around parking and the school runs.

  • Ridge and valley failures on 1930s clay in Hinchley Wood

What Is WrongWith My Roof?

The six things Esher customers call us about most. Choose the one you can see and we will tell you what it usually is.

  • Natural slate roof with a new lead valley, the detail a ceiling stain usually traces back to

    Likely cause

Usually a slipped or cracked tile, or failed lead around a chimney or valley. The stain is rarely under the hole: water runs along a rafter before it drops. We trace it back rather than guess.

Esher questions

QuestionsFrom Esher.

Anything not covered here, call 01372 540 258 and ask. You will get a roofer, not a call centre.

Do you cover Claygate and Hinchley Wood?

Yes, both, plus Thames Ditton, Weston Green and Oxshott.

My extension roof leaks where it meets the house. Is that common?

Very. The abutment where a new roof meets an old wall or roof needs lead and a proper detail, and it is often the last thing done on an extension. We re form it.

How far is Esher from you?

About fifteen minutes from Leatherhead. Leaks are usually seen the same day.

Do I need planning permission for roof work in Esher?

For a repair or a re roof in the same material, normally not. A listed building needs consent for most roof work, and in a conservation area a change of material on a roof seen from the street may need permission from the council. We check the status of your house before we quote and tell you what applies.

Do you arrange the scaffold and access in Esher?

Yes. Most houses in Esher have a drive or a quiet road for the scaffold, and where it has to stand on a pavement the licence from the council is applied for before the start. We are 5 miles away in Leatherhead, so a survey is usually within the week and a leak can often be looked at the same day.
