Church Street and the River
The old village runs down Church Street towards the River Mole: timber framed and brick cottages, a good number listed, roofed in handmade clay and slate. Their roofs are steep, small and full of character, with low eaves, little dormers and wandering ridges, and most of the work is careful repair in matching materials with lead shaped by hand.
Fairmile and the Private Roads
Fairmile Lane and the private roads off it carry some of the largest houses we work on. Edwardian and Arts and Crafts houses in handmade clay have deep valleys and tall stacks, while newer houses have big concrete tile roofs and long gutter runs. Size is the challenge: a single roof can have a dozen valleys.
Stoke d’Abernon and Downside
Stoke d’Abernon mixes older cottages with sizeable houses from between and after the wars, and Downside keeps a proper village green ringed by period houses. Clay plain tiles are the norm, with slate on the Victorian buildings, and mortar bedded ridges and hips are a regular repair.
Oxshott and Hatchford
Oxshott and the Hatchford side are mostly large detached houses from the 1920s onwards, many extended more than once. Every extension adds a junction with the original roof, and the lead at those junctions, the abutments and back gutters, is where most leaks on these houses begin.
