Roofers Across Epsomand Ewell.

Epsom is a mix: the Victorian and Edwardian town centre under slate, the huge 1930s suburbs of Ewell and Stoneleigh under clay and concrete, and the larger houses up on the Downs. We work across all of it from Leatherhead, ten minutes away.

Epsom’s roofs

What the Houses Are,and What Goes Wrong.

The Town Centre and the Older Streets

Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas, mostly under Welsh slate with lead valleys and tall chimneys. A century on, these roofs are into nail sickness and their lead is close to the end of its life. They are also the roofs that most often get patched with sealant by someone in a hurry, which is a six month fix.

Ewell, Stoneleigh and the 1930S

A vast stretch of inter war semis, clay plain tiles and the early concrete tiles, with hips and gables and the ridge mortar that goes first. Many now have loft conversions with dormers, and the dormer lead and flat roofs are a common call.

Epsom Downs and the Larger Houses

Bigger detached houses on bigger plots, often with complicated roofs: multiple hips, valleys and chimneys, and sometimes clay tiles that are hard to match. These are survey first jobs, because the roof you can see from the drive is a fraction of it.

The Streets and Their Roofs

Epsom is the biggest spread of housing we cover in Surrey. The town centre and the roads around the station are Victorian and Edwardian, slate and clay with tall chimneys. Ewell and Stoneleigh are almost entirely 1930s, clay plain tile and the odd early concrete roof, and Epsom Downs, Langley Vale and Tattenham Corner mix inter war houses with post war bungalows and estates in concrete interlocking tile.

Working in Epsom

Epsom is five miles from the office and covered from the Leatherhead line, 01372 540 258. The borough is Epsom and Ewell, and the town centre has conservation areas where a roof visible from the street should be repaired like for like. On the tighter Victorian streets near the station the scaffold sometimes has to sit on the pavement, which needs a licence from the council that the scaffold company applies for.

What we are called to in Epsom

  • Nail sickness on slate roofs in the town centre
  • Ridge and hip mortar failing on 1930s clay in Ewell and Stoneleigh
  • Dormer flat roofs and lead on converted lofts
  • Chimney flashings on tall Victorian stacks
  • Complex valleys on the larger Downs houses

Roof repairs in Epsom

What Is WrongWith My Roof?

The six things Epsom customers call us about most. Choose the one you can see and we will tell you what it usually is.

  • Natural slate roof with a new lead valley, the detail a ceiling stain usually traces back to

    Likely cause

Usually a slipped or cracked tile, or failed lead around a chimney or valley. The stain is rarely under the hole: water runs along a rafter before it drops. We trace it back rather than guess.

Epsom questions

QuestionsFrom Epsom.

Anything not covered here, call 01372 540 258 and ask. You will get a roofer, not a call centre.

Do you cover Ewell and Stoneleigh as well as Epsom?

Yes, and Epsom Downs, Langley Vale and Tattenham Corner. If it has an Epsom postcode we are there.

Can you repair a Victorian slate roof in Epsom without re roofing it?

If it is a handful of slips, yes. If it is nail sickness across the roof, we will show you the photographs and be honest that re fixing one slate at a time is a losing battle.

How quickly can you come out to Epsom?

Usually the same day for a leak. Epsom is ten minutes from our base.

Do I need planning permission for roof work in Epsom?

For a repair or a re roof in the same material, normally not. A listed building needs consent for most roof work, and in a conservation area a change of material on a roof seen from the street may need permission from the council. We check the status of your house before we quote and tell you what applies.

Do you arrange the scaffold and access in Epsom?

Yes. Most houses in Epsom have a drive or a quiet road for the scaffold, and where it has to stand on a pavement the licence from the council is applied for before the start. We are 5 miles away in Leatherhead, so a survey is usually within the week and a leak can often be looked at the same day.
