What the Houses Are,and What Goes Wrong.
A Town of Three Roof Types
Leatherhead grew in three pushes. The old town centre has Victorian and Edwardian houses under Welsh slate, much of it now on its second set of fixings. The 1930s brought the semis along the Kingston Road and out towards Fetcham, mostly clay plain tiles and a few with the original concrete. Then the post war estates, concrete interlocking tiles, many now on their first re roof.
What That Means for Repairs
The slate roofs suffer from nail sickness, where the original iron nails rust through and slates start sliding on a roof that looks fine. The plain tile roofs lose their ridge mortar and their valleys. The concrete roofs are the easiest to match and the most likely to be simply at the end of the felt underneath.
Fetcham, Bookham and the Villages
Fetcham and Great Bookham are largely inter war and post war family houses with a scattering of much older cottages, some under handmade clay and one or two under thatch that we do not touch. The newer estates to the south have flat roofed garages and extensions that are now reaching the age where felt gives up.
The Streets and Their Roofs
The town centre and the streets off Church Street and Bridge Street are the oldest roofs we see, Victorian and Edwardian houses under Welsh slate with lead valleys and shared party wall chimneys. Out along the Kingston Road, Copthorne Road and into Fetcham the houses are 1930s semi-detached and detached houses in clay plain tile, and the post war estates between the town and Bookham, and around Givons Grove, are mostly concrete interlocking tile on their first or second underlay.
