We keep a Reigate line, 01737 749202, because we do enough work here. Victorian and Edwardian roofs in the centre and on the Hill, inter war and post war further out, and the weather off the North Downs on all of it.

Reigate’s roofs
Around the High Street, Bell Street and the castle grounds, Reigate's centre is a conservation area with listed buildings among the older shops and houses. The roofs mix slate and clay, with parapets, valleys and the odd concealed gutter, and are repaired in kind. Narrow streets mean scaffold positions are planned carefully.
Up the hill towards the North Downs, the big Victorian and Edwardian houses have tall chimneys, decorative gables and roofs in Welsh slate and clay plain tile. They are exposed, and the weather that comes over the Downs hits the stacks and ridges hardest. Much of our slate and chimney work in Reigate is up here.
Many Reigate villas have upper walls hung with clay tiles and gables with decorative bargeboards. Tile hanging is a roof turned on its side: battens, nails and tiles, and it fails the same way. Where hanging tiles meet a window head or a roof below, the flashing is what keeps the wall dry.
To the south and west, Meadvale, Woodhatch and South Park are a mix of Victorian cottages, inter war semis and post war houses, clay plain tile giving way to concrete interlocking as you go out. The inter war roofs are mostly on their original battens, sound from the road and tired up close.
Out by the heath and towards Buckland and Betchworth, houses stand further apart and more exposed to the wind. Handmade clay cottages sit beside 1960s and 70s houses whose flat roofed garages and extensions have now worn through their felt.
We keep a Reigate line, 01737 749202, which rings through to the same team. Reigate is eight miles east of our base, in Reigate and Banstead. Most houses have a drive for the scaffold; on the terraced streets near the centre a pavement licence is sometimes needed, and we arrange it.
North of the town centre, around Wray Common and its windmill, the streets are Victorian and Edwardian, with larger houses under slate and clay, decorative ridges and tall stacks. Mature trees line many of the roads, so gutters and valleys fill with leaves, and moss grows thick on the north facing slopes.
Between the station and the town centre, a number of Reigate's larger Victorian houses have been divided into flats. One roof then belongs to several owners, and the top flat usually notices a problem first. Work on them starts with a survey everyone can see, and a written price that can be shared between the flats or handled by a managing agent.
What we are called to in Reigate
What we do in Reigate

Reigate roofs are mostly sound with one weak point: a valley, a flashing, a slipped slate. We find the real cause and fix it, rather than quoting for a whole roof.

Welsh slate covers Reigate's Victorian houses in the town and up the Hill. Broken or slipped slates are replaced with matched reclaimed ones; a roof whose nails have gone throughout is relaid on new battens.

Stacks on Reigate Hill face whatever comes over the North Downs. We repoint them, renew the flaunching and lead, refit pots, and rebuild the top where the brickwork needs it.

Roof repairs in Reigate
The faults Reigate owners phone us about most. Choose the one that sounds like your roof.

Likely cause
On exposed Reigate Hill stacks, the pointing opens, the flaunching on top cracks and the stepped lead lifts. Water then soaks down through the brickwork. We repair the part that has failed, and rebuild the top courses where the brick has gone soft.

Likely cause
The slate often has decades left in it; the iron nails do not. Odd slips are held with copper hooks. Where slipping is general, we strip, re-batten and relay, reusing the good slate.

Slate Roofing in Reigate
Likely cause
Hanging tiles are held by nails into battens, and when either fails they slide out. Water then reaches the wall or the timber frame behind. We refix the tiling on new battens with matched clay tiles.

Likely cause
Semis in Woodhatch and South Park have a valley where the front gable joins the hipped roof. Its old lining wears through and the cut tiles alongside slip. A new valley, with the edge tiles relaid, ends the leak.
Usually the job is
Leadwork in Reigate
Likely cause
Felt garage roofs from the 1970s and 80s sag between the joists and hold puddles, which shortens their life further. We take off the felt, replace soft decking, build the falls back in and lay GRP or new felt.

When a storm strips tiles or slates, the first job is to make the roof weathertight, the same day where we can, and the second is the permanent repair. The mobile, 07513 397 799, is answered around the clock, and the Reigate line in office hours.
